Balckbridge reopens.THE Black Bridge over the River Avon in Chippenham has now been reopened following emergency repairs.
Earlier in the year, two holes appeared in the wooden decking and after a series of inspections it was discovered that joints in the decking had not been constructed in the way that the original designer had intended.
The bridge has been closed to allow all the timber decking to be replaced with metal.
The work means the bridge has increased durability and will need less frequent maintenance.
The work provided a challenge to local contractor DHF Engineering of Melksham.
They had to work safely at a height of 10 metres above the river without causing an obstruction and had to remove the old wooden panels without letting debris fall into the river.
Cllr Dick Tonge, leader of North Wiltshire District Council, said: "The bridge reopening is great news for everyone that uses this important route in and out of Chippenham.
"There has been a real effort to carry out the necessary repairs quickly. The good weather and a real effort by the contractor has meant the bridge has reopened as quickly as was possible."
