A FOOTBRIDGE in Chippenham will remain closed until further notice after further flaws were found in its structure.
More holes have been discovered in the wooden decking of the Black Bridge over the River Avon, weeks after the bridge was first closed for repairs.
Earlier in the year, two holes appeared in the bridge decking and after a series of inspections it was discovered that joints in the decking had not been constructed in the way that the original designer had intended.
advertisementAttempts to contact the bridge contractor revealed that the company had been dissolved.
The plan is now to replace all timber decking with metal. This will have the advantages of increased durability and will need less frequent maintenance.
Work could start in April and completed in two weeks, allowing the bridge to reopen next month.
