There's an interesting string discussing the possible future of Lyneham, suggesting it as an alternative to the 3rd runway at Heathrow, linked by a high speed rail line running London-Heathrow-Lyneham-Bristol-Cardiff:

The unanswered question is, would saving and creating local jobs this way (not just directly at the base, but by attracting lots more firms to the area) be a good thing, or would the cost in noise, traffic etc be too high so Lyneham should just be allowed to die peacefully?

| Presumably passenger jets would be less noisy than low-flying RAF aircraft in any case though? |

Would prefer the RAF to stay at Lyneham, if not then let the Army Air Corps have it.. if not then CHippenham International Airport, has a nice ring to it.
